Slow Pulp on New Music, Day Drinking, and Rockstar Inspirations

The sun is beaming, and the crowd is electric as Slow Pulp finishes their set with custom water BORGS in hand. Fresh off the stage, we caught Emily Massey for a quick conversation, buzzing from her set. Midway through, we were interrupted as Wacka began his grand entrance to the stage, but in the few minutes we had, we talked about everything from their low-key pre-show rituals to what would go into their version of a BORG..
Lisa: I have to say—you were amazing live. Truly. It’s so good to see you guys.
Emily: Thank you. Yeah, it’s been a while since we’ve played a show, so we’re kind of getting back into it. Hopefully more soon.
Glenn: We were going to end with this, but I want to start here. You blacked out your Instagram—and people are curious. There’s even a Reddit thread. So… what’s going on?
Emily: Something is definitely coming. We’re gearing up for it. I don’t know how much we can say yet, but you’ll know more in the next month or so.
Lisa: Can we expect more O.C. references?
Emily: Less so on this record—but I’m always watching The O.C.
Lisa: Do you have a pre-show ritual?
Emily: Yeah, we usually put our hands in together and say something—like a sports team. It’s always different, kind of an inside joke or whatever comes up that day. We didn’t do one today though… I just realized that!
Glenn: Okay, important question: if you were making a BORG—like a gallon drink for a festival—what would you put in it?
Emily: That’s scary. I am not a big day drinker. Probably… kombucha. Wait—warm kombucha is a bad idea. Water. Yeah—water. Mostly water.
Lisa: What’s the inspiration behind your music videos? I love them, especially Falling Apart.
Emily: We just love working with directors—really talented people…
Glenn: I know you guys met in grade school, and I love that story. What would grade school self think about you guys now if they could see you guys?
Emily: Oh, absolutely. I’m excited. Like, dreams come true. I always knew I wanted to be Avril Levine. I think I tried as hard as I could to. And Here we are!
